Nigerian actress Linda Osifo discusses her motivation for bleaching her skin
Linda Osifo, a Nollywood actress, has disclosed that she thought about whitening her skin while in Canada due to racist epithets.
The actress, who was raised in Canada after relocating to that country at the age of 16, claimed that the racism she experienced traumatised her because it came from "within."
In a recent interview with media figure Chude Jideonwo, she revealed this.
The host, Chude, questioned: "You mentioned wanted to bleach your skin because you were worried that people might mistake you for a monkey when you grew older. Was this really what happened?
"Yeah," Osifo retorted. There is no doubt about that. You know, it also occurs from your shade. That being the case, it is much stranger.
"I've always believed that bullies don't typically target people they don't know. It originates inside. Because if someone else says it, you might not care, but if someone close to you says it—someone you kind of see every other day—it hurts more.
"I was a teenager in Canada at the time. The good thing about returning to Nigeria was that I could now see more people who resembled myself.
She continued by saying that moving to Nigeria helped her to value herself more.
