The well-known radio host who spewed blood and became blind-Otwinoko
Linsford Kwabena Asare, often known as Otwinoko, a radio host located in Kumasi, has described the circumstances that led to his blindness.
In the 2000s, Otwinoko was probably one of Kumasi's best and most popular radio hosts. He launched his career in mainstream radio at Mercury 91.5FM, which is now New Mercury 91.5FM, where he also aired his well-liked programme, "Nsem Pii."
On "Nsem Pii," he concentrated on riddles or situations that had a spiritual component. When he started having health problems and eventually went blind, his career nearly came to an end. He claimed that very close friends and acquaintances who were jealous of his success were behind his collapse and loss of sight.
Otwinoko recounted what transpired, saying that his problems and deteriorating health all started when he went to a hospital that had been recommended to him by his close buddy Yaw Opoku. Otwinoko thinks Yaw Opoku, who he (Otwinoko) frequently fed and to whom he showed unfailing kindness, was a member of the conspirators behind his collapse.
A year after I started working at Fox FM, it all started. Yaw Opoku was a dear buddy of mine. When I got back from the United States, I went to a public hospital for treatment since I was having a terrible backache. Strangely, the doctor who was scheduled to treat me had to withdraw because he needed to go somewhere to handle a personal matter.
Soon after, Yaw Opoku suggested going to a well-respected physician he knew. In an interview that was featured on Otwinoko TV on YouTube, Otwinoko narrated, "When he mentioned the doctor, I asked to speak to him, but Yaw Opoku stated his phone's battery was dead, so I went with him to meet the doctor the next day.
The doctor found some malaria parasites in my system while I was at the hospital, so they had to administer a drip to me, he said. When the doctor realised I was Otwinoko, he proposed that because of my fame, I should be given a private room. I dozed off and abruptly awoke to find Yaw Opoku photographing me.
I think he used this as proof to convince his contractors that he had been effective.
Otwinoko claims that he reprimanded Yaw Opoku for snapping pictures of him. When he returned to the hospital after the event, Yaw Opoku did not go with him because, according to him (Yaw Opoku), he had to oversee the construction of a new building. The well-known radio host admitted that his eye issues began on his second visit.
He recalled, "After our initial appointment, which I believe occurred on a Monday, I was scheduled to see the doctor again on Wednesday, but Yaw Opoku informed me that he was unable to accompany me because he had accepted a contract to oversee a building development.
After my second visit, I realised I wasn't seeing things clearly, so I had to park outside the Ridge Police Station and wait for a buddy to pick me up on the way home. Since then, there have been numerous health issues.
Otwinoko described how Yaw Opoku barred his family and several people who may have helped from seeing him when he was brought to the hospital as his condition worsened.
You wouldn't believe that the same Yaw Opoku blocked my family and friends from visiting and providing support when I was admitted to Komfo Anokye, when there were rumours that I had passed away. He was circulating speculations about why I was ill at the time, contending that a pesticide was to blame.
I was at home chewing sugar cane approximately three weeks after being released from the hospital when I spilt blood, and the rest is history. I went to hospitals in South Africa, Nigeria, and the United States about my issue since I had a really bad burning sensation in my feet and was unable to see anything, but nothing helped, he said.
Otwinoko explained that he was alert and made connections to support his claim that Yaw Opoku was the root of his problems. He claimed that Yaw Opoku, who is now deceased, irritated the nurses at the Okomfo Anokye Teaching Hospital where he was receiving care to the point that he stopped them from giving him the medication that was recommended.
"I recall that my brother, a doctor, gave me eyedrops after I was released. The exact same Yaw Opoku visited my home. To top off my airtime, I made someone buy a scratch card for me. Yaw Opoku was astonished and questioned if I could see again as I scratched the card. So I corrected him. I recognised he was responsible at that point.
"Three days later, while watching television with my sister, I became aware that my vision was deteriorating. I was no longer able to see after that.
Otwinoko claims that despite spending enormous quantities of money, he has travelled to South Africa and Malaysia for surgery.
"The amount of money my family and I and some colleagues have spent hoping I would regain my sight, you have no idea," he stated.
According to the broadcaster, Yaw Opoku frequently expressed the opinion that Yaw Opoku was to blame for his blindness during his existence. Additionally, he openly challenged Yaw Opoku to take any action, such as calling him in to show his innocence.
Yaw Opoku ignored these persistent challenges and did nothing to respond to the charges.
In what seemed to be advise, Otwinoko added, "I was admitted to Komfo Anokye, but I'm alive; such is life. It is smart for people to shun evil since the evil that men commit lingers after them. It's interesting to note that Yaw Opoku passed away while receiving therapy in the same ward where I received my treatment. He did not live, but I did. In life, we should use great caution. You simply shouldn't play fast and loose with anyone, Otwinoko advised.
